Racist Shoes?

It amuses me how people seem to effortlessly rally around a “movement” that has zero plans or methods to actually resolve any issues. Before I begin to ramble on about things that actually deserve our attention and action I’ll discuss the latest uproar around a pair of gym shoes designed by Jeremy Scott (a designer who I have been a fan of for some time now) for Adidas. The shoes (as pictured) have plastic chains attached to them and the tagline for the pair says something along the lines of “are your shoes so cool that you need chains?” My honest initial reaction (aside form thinking the shoes are ugly, sorry Jeremy) was that this was a innovative marketing idea and it actually sheds light on the fact that every other day someone is getting robbed for a pair of expensive gym shoes. In recent months, I can think of at least 4 murders that have occurred during a robbery for gym shoes. However, there are an overwhelming amount of people who have decided to boycott Adidas because they feel that the shoes promote slavery and racism and that they make fun of African-Americans. I’m surprised to see that no one mentioned that such anger wasn’t pinned towards designers that have created high heels with chains around the ankles. Why is such a big deal being made about sneakers? I’ve posted a link to Yahoo! below if you want to read further about the comments that have been made towards the Adidas and to see the status of the boycott.

I’m interested to know what you feel about this. Do you think the shoes are racist or do you think that the designer is using his creative freedom to create something out of the norm?
